Great photos of my hiking in the “Vallée des Avals” on Wednesday to the “Brèche de la Portetta”.

This hike is to some of the most spectacular scenery of the massif of Vanoise: The Roc is a citadel with limestone towers. It has the ambience of the Dolomites!

Historically, the “Brèche de la Portetta” inspired my new Ski Excel logo.

The Brèche de la Portetta (2651m) by Courchevel 1650

Practical information:

Map: IGN TOP25 3534 OT Les Trois Vallées Modane
Departure altitude: 1750m.
Arrival altitude: 2651m.
Vertical drop: 900m.
Schedule: 3:30 climb, descent 2:30
Orientation: W.
Look at the route on an IGN Map.

Description of the route:

Go up the “Vallée des Avals” to the Alpine huts of Biol (1875m).
Shortly after, take the marked trail towards the “Bréche de la Portetta”.

First, one goes up grassy slopes then a steep scree.
The scenery is spectacular when under the four imposing, rocky pillars.

Climb as high as possible in the gap (2651m) to a rock platform where the view is magnificent.
After visiting the breach, retrace your steps and continue the ascent to the “Passage de Mey” .
Descend by the same route.

In winter, ski touring to The “La Brèche de La Portetta” can be achieved by the same route, but more commonly by the classic route from the “chalets de la Grande Val” after a beautiful descent from the Col de Chanrossa.

From the “chalets de la Grande Val”, climb to the Col des Saulces.
Continue climbing the “plan des Baux” to reach the “Rocher de Plassa” (2835m beside the point).
Go downhill and cross under the Aiguille de Mey towards a couloir where access is gained to The “Bréche de la Portetta” or “Passage de Mey”.

(Orientation: W; times are 2:30 to 3 hours of ascent, altitude difference descent to Pralognan La Vanoise: 1200m)
